Dalaman

Kas was originally a fishing village which has grown into an unspoilt tourist resort in this lovely area on Turkey’s south Mediterranean coast. It is beautifully located amongst towering cliffs and has a rocky coastline leading into the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. It is also an excellent base for visitors to travel to the many historical sites scattered throughout the area. Kas is not as busy as several of the other resorts along this turquoise coast as it is further away from the airports but many people find this one of its main attractions.

Overview

This beautiful green peninsula is home to a colourful Bohemian population as well as some of Turkey’s most rich and famous. Kas town is a small, quaint centre with a few shops, cafes and a number of fantastic restaurants.

Kas’s hot summers and warm, wet winters mean the peninsula has a wealth of citrus fruit and bananas, while its hillsides yield honey and almonds. The greenness of the peninsula is a huge draw for the select numbers of visitors who arrive each summer.

This idyllic town has all you could possibly want from a summer destination. Three hundred annual days of sunshine, clear waters, quality homes and good facilities. And for such a laid back destination there is plenty to do in Kas: relax beside the pool; swim from one of the many beach platforms; attend a jazz concert at the local theatre; go diving; park yourself at a cafe and watch the passersby or use it as a base to explore some of the nearby wonders like Patara Beach and Kalkan.

A weekly market sells fresh produce, meat and handicrafts. There is a small medical centre and a few shops, but you would need to go further afield for specialist medical help or larger shops.

Things to do in Kas

Boat trips are popular in Turkey and this particular stretch of coast offers many glass-bottomed boat trips to the underwater cities around Kekova Island and visitors are able to view the remains of ancient civilisations just below the sea. A trip to the Blue Cave is another popular cruise as well.

Kas itself has grown around the ancient city of Antiphellos and there are remains of a Hellenistic theatre as well as sarcophagi in the town and you will be amazed at how well the new and ancient buildings actually mingle with one another. There are also some rock tombs both in and around the hillsides of the town including the spectacular Lion Tomb.

There are several restaurants, cafes and patisseries in Kas as well as numerous bars and visitors will find it difficult to choose where to dine out as there is such an enormous choice of culinary delights available here.

There are carpet shops galore, jewellery outlets , boutiques with their designer wear, several souvenir shops and also hand-carved ornaments and objects of interest are available. There are some fine bargains to be found if you look beyond the usual touristy items and many a holidaymaker has gone home with an absolute gem.

How to go?

The peninsula is around 1.5 hours’ drive from Dalaman Airport, leaving it safely untouched by mass tourism. Kas town is located on a hill running down to the sea. Homes are spread around the outside of the peninsula, which is roughly divided into two parts: the Meis Island side at the end of the peninsula and the marina side, on the west. On the marina side you’ll enjoy spectacular sunsets and the sight of boats sailing to and from the marina. On the Meis side you’ll overlook a huge expanse of sea, and of course, the Greek island of Meis.
